Boulder Open Space
For more than 118 years, generations of Boulder residents have tirelessly worked to safeguard the unique and breathtaking landscapes that surround them. Starting with a community vote to purchase land near the base of the Flatirons in 1898, to instituting the United States first municipal tax for open space acquisitions in 1967, Boulder residents have an incredible legacy of community-driven conservation and stewardship.

This year, the City of Boulder and our community will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Boulder residents’ passage of a .4-cent dedicated sales tax to acquire and maintain open space. This historic and innovative measure has helped the City of Boulder to create a 45,000-acre Open Space and Mountain Parks system where people can connect with nature, and plant and wildlife can thrive in their native habitats.

During this anniversary celebration, we will recognize and honor the community leaders who helped pass this important measure and the important legacy they left to our community. We also will celebrate the City of Boulder’s open space system, and our community’s continuing support to help the city safeguard and improve it for future generations to enjoy.
