KGNU, Boulder Weekly and Twist & Shout Present
The Greyboy Allstars Ft. Fred Wesley
with Orgone
Event Information
The Greyboy Allstars will be performing their seminal first album West Coast Boogaloo in its entirety, featuring legendary trombonist, Fred Wesley (James Brown).
The Greyboy Allstars evolved out of the San Diego scene in the early-90s where DJ Greyboy (Andreas Stephens) performed a weekly gig augmenting his DJ sets using live instrumentation which featured future GBA co-founder, Karl Denson. Out of those early sessions, The Greyboy Allstars were born, generating a catalog rich in late 60s/early 70s soul jazz and boogaloo. GBA went on to perform in concert far and wide along with recording four stellar albums including, West Coast Boogaloo (1995) featuring DJ Greyboy and James Brown alumnus Fred Wesley, Live (1997), A Town Called Earth (1997), and reunited with DJ Greyboy along with Inara George for What Happened to Television (2007.
GBA’s success served as a platform for the members to launch highly successful careers in their own rite. After The Greyboy Allstars scored the film Zero Effect, guitarist/composer, Elgin Park (aka Michael Andrews) continued to write for the screen including films such as Cyrus, Bad Teacher and Bridesmaids, Donnie Darko, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
Saxophonist and lead vocalist Karl Denson continues to lead a very diverse career from his stint in Lenny Kravitz’ band to fronting, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, one of the most successful live funk bands on the planet. KDTU’s live shows have become legendary on the international and domestic scene, playing historic sets at festivals including Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Fuji Rock Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival, The North Sea Jazz Festival and countless others.
Multi-talented keyboardist Robert Walter formed his own group, the 20th Congress and released the classic albums Money Shot and Super Heavy Organ to great acclaim. Walter has also toured and recorded with artists including Alex Ounsworth ( Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), The Headhunters, Anders Osborne, and Stanton Moore. Currently Walter has been in the studio with recording and scoring the films in collaboration with Elgin Park.
Bassist Chris Stillwell tours and records extensively with KDTU and is an in-demand session player on the Southern Californian scene. Drummer Aaron Redfield can be heard on the new releases from indie darlings Sia and Cake, and has been on the road with everyone from The Bird and the Bee and Nikka Costa and countless others.
